From analysis to action: a next step in advancing the Kurdish vegetable value chain programme
What began last year with a detailed market analysis of the Kurdish vegetable sector, has now evolved into a hands-on, action-oriented project. In September we officially launched this initiative in Sulaymaniyah, bringing together key stakeholders from across the value chain: farmers, traders, suppliers, retailers, hotels, government bodies and consumers.
The project focuses on strengthening the cucumber and tomato value chains in the region, with the overarching goal of boosting competitiveness and creating sustainable opportunities. Together with our partners, we will define market specifications, test packaging solutions, identify packing locations and support farmers and businesses in implementing food safety measures. The programme is being carried out in partnership with Green Solution and guided by the expertise of Dr Sulaiman Ali, with support from the Dutch Enterprise Agency.
The key areas of action are:
- Fostering cooperation between value chain actors by organizing in-field workshops and market exposure visits.
- Improving sorting and packing by piloting improved packaging to reduce post-harvest losses and present local produce more attractively.
- Promoting food safety through practical coaching and implementing protocols to ensure healthy and safe products.
- Encouraging the use of new varieties by testing market-demanded crops to better align production with consumer needs.
This collaboration highlights the importance of connecting all links in the value chain and illustrating the journey a product takes from plant to plate, with value added at every stage. We are grateful for the warm welcome, the spirit of collaboration and the opportunity to contribute to the development of the vegetable value chain in this region.
