In June 2019, for the fifth year in a row, a Chinese tree nursery delegation visited the Netherlands under the leadership of Mr. Wang Jianming for a two-week study tour. The group consisted of 18 specialists from tree growing, rose cultivation, city greening and machinery production. They were in search of the right direction for future development of the Chinese tree nursery sector. Upgrading, transformation and destocking are words which have been widely discussed in the Chinese tree sector for the past few years. Such discussions reveal the difficulties and opportunities that the Chinese tree sector is currently facing.
Since the year 2000, the Chinese tree sector has been booming, in part due to favourable government policy and high demand from the real estate and city greening projects. However, problems such as non-homogeneous product, overcapacity, limited varieties and low cultivation level have emerged over the past 10 years. Due to this an imbalanced supply and demand structure developed in the Chinese tree sector. The sector realized that its outdated and low-end products and services will no longer fit the increasingly diversified and personalized demands of the market. Therefore, changes need to be made in order to stay competitive. With this in mind, this fifth study tour could only be a success!
